Dossola's growing access to healthcare supplies
Dossola is a remote village situated just 16 kilometers south of the capital city, Bamako, with a population of approximately 4,200 residents, including 325 students. The village has long struggled with maternal health issues, with many pregnant women lacking essential nutritional knowledge and dietary resources, contributing to an alarmingly high infant mortality rate of around 50%.
To address these critical health concerns, the Mali Wellness Foundation implemented a comprehensive educational program focused on nutrition and childbirth preparation. Each mother received prenatal vitamins, with clear instructions to take one capsule daily to support their health and that of their unborn children. Additionally, vision screenings were conducted to identify villagers suffering from cataracts and poor eyesight, offering those in need the opportunity to undergo cataract surgery in October 2022.
To further enhance community health and economic stability, a chicken house was constructed, and the Mali Wellness Foundation supplied 200 chicks, along with feeders and vaccinations. Villagers received training to effectively manage and sustain a small-scale poultry business, empowering them to improve their nutrition and livelihood.
