Dossola

Provide villagers with increased nourishment by teaching proper gardening techniques and installing a drip system

Dossola’s increasing nourishment through drip-line irrigation

Dossola is a remote village about 16 kilometers south of the capitol city, Bamako. There are roughly 4,200 villagers, including 325 students. Basic nutrition was not available or understood.

The Mali Wellness Foundation drilled a deep well system (240 ft) that does not dry up in the summer months. The system includes a newly designed filtration system to ensure pure, potable water for both the school and the village. The well connects to a drip-line irrigation system bringing water to the community vegetable garden which provides meal supplementation for the villagers. Each row of the garden has a separate valve to regulate the flow of water.

Villagers were trained to plant green beans, tomatoes, squash, okra, cucumbers, beets, carrots, lettuce, and watermelon and to maintain the garden drip-line irrigation system. Four banana trees were planted.
