Binabougou

Provide villagers with increased health through eye, ear, and feminine hygiene care

Binabougou’s growing public access to clean water.

Binabougou is a remote village about three kilometers north of the capitol city, Bamako. There are roughly 3,500 villagers, including 931 elementary and middle school students. Less than 20 percent of girls in villages throughout Mali reach secondary education, the leading cause is due to the lack of access to feminine hygiene products.

The Mali Wellness Foundation improved health conditions by distributing hygiene kits to each of the students. The kits included a toothbrush, toothpaste, wash rags, and bar of soap.  Each student received training on proper personal hygiene procedures.

In efforts to increase female student attendance, and help young girls feel more comfortable and prepared at school, each girl over the age of 11 received a Days for Girl kit. A certified health instructor taught the basics of menstrual hygiene and demonstrated how the kits could be used and reused.
